The HVAC Technician - Second Shift is responsible for operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing HVAC and mechanical systems supporting continuous mission-critical data center operations. This role provides after-hours technical coverage to ensure system reliability, rapid response to alarms, and seamless handoff between shifts.
The technician works independently while coordinating closely with site operations, Controls, Chiller, Electrical, and on-call support teams.

- Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on HVAC systems, including CRAH/CRAC units, AHUs, condensers, pumps, VFDs, humidification systems, and associated mechanical equipment.
- Monitor system performance, BAS/BMS alarms, trends, and environmental conditions during second shift to ensure thermal stability and environmental compliance.
- Respond to HVAC alarms, alerts, and service requests, initiating escalation procedures as required.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and basic controls issues impacting HVAC performance and reliability.
- Execute approved work in accordance with SOPs, MOPs, EOPs, safety procedures, and change-control requirements to prevent impact to critical operations.
- Support scheduled maintenance activities and planned work occurring during second-shift maintenance windows.
- Perform inspections, identify deficiencies, and document corrective actions or follow-up needs.
- Coordinate with first-shift teams to ensure accurate turnover of system status, issues, and ongoing work.
- Escort and oversee third-party vendors performing after-hours maintenance or repairs.
- Accurately document all work performed in the CMMS, including findings, repairs, recommendations, and escalation details.
- Maintain strict adherence to all safety, environmental, and mission-critical procedures.
- Minimum 3-5 years of commercial or industrial HVAC experience; data center or mission-critical experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of chilled water systems, airflow management, humidity control, HVAC controls interfaces, VFDs, and pumps.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, and sequences of operation.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work independently during off-peak hours.
- Experience following SOPs, MOPs, EOPs, and shift handoff procedures preferred.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, including clear shift documentation and escalation.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or trade school preferred.
Preferred Certifications / Training
- EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification preferred
- OEM HVAC or CRAC/CRAH training preferred
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 preferred
- BAS/BMS or controls familiarity, such as Niagara, Siemens, Schneider, or similar, a plus
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, and work in mechanical rooms for extended periods.
- Ability to climb ladders and work at heights as required.
Work Environment
- Mission-critical data center environment requiring high attention to detail, procedural discipline, safety awareness, and reliable shift documentation.
- Second-shift coverage; occasional extended hours or emergency response may be required.
