HVAC Refrigeration Mechanic II - (260003CJ)

Description

 

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) is seeking a dynamic HVAC II mechanic to join our Facility department’s trades worker team. The incumbent would install heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment including related equipment. You would also perform preventative maintenance on all equipment and maintain all HVAC and refrigeration equipment in proper operating order along with the other HVAC technicians and contractors. The HVAC II reports to the Foreman and Director of Facilities. Help keep our air systems and environment at the highest standard for our patients and staff.

Schedule:  Monday - Friday 7:30AM-4PM

 

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Install HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including controls and related fixtures (air/water filters, refrigeration piping).

  • Maintain, repair, and complete preventative maintenance on various HVAC equipment (window A/C units, chilled water units, split systems, steam absorbers, cooling towers, air handlers, pneumatic controls).

  • Maintain, repair, and complete preventative maintenance on refrigeration units (refrigerators, walk-in coolers, ice machines, chilled water units for drinking water).

  • Maintain, repair, and complete preventative maintenance on heating, exhaust, ventilation systems, and make-up air handler units.

  • Check equipment for malfunctions by observing pressure/vacuum gauges and other indicators, adjusting controls, testing joints for gas leaks, and using testing equipment (voltmeters, ohmmeters, amprobes).

  • Maintain, rebuild, and replace worn or defective parts, replace/reclaim specified gases or fluids, lubricate motors and bearings.

  • Calculate heat loads for new installations and treat water systems (cooling towers) with algicides to prevent airborne bacteria.

  • Perform related work (pipe fitting, threading, soldering, brazing, installing compressors, temperature/humidity controls, circulating fans).

Required Qualifications:

  • Perform standard preventive maintenance for HVAC and electrical systems.

  • Lubricate machinery and equipment efficiently.

  • Maintain small hand and power tools.

  • Follow safety practices in installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC and electrical systems.

  • Utilize terminology, coding, symbols, and abbreviations in HVAC installations.

  • Apply methods and techniques in HVAC and electrical system repairs.

  • Conduct pipe threading effectively.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understand laws, rules, and regulations for unit activities.

  • Implement policies, procedures, specifications, and standards for unit activities.

  • Be familiar with state laws, procedures, and guidelines.

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

 

Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

 

The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements: 

Applicants must have at least two years of full-time, or equivalent part- time technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating and air conditioning systems, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. 

Substitutions: 

I. A certificate or diploma from a recognized institution above the high school level, as evidence of completion of a two year program in refrigeration and heating, may be substituted for one year of the required experience.* 

*Education toward such a certificate or diploma will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. 

Special Requirements: Based on assignment, a current and valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician's License may be required.

 

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
