Job Description

Summary

Drew University is seeking a Journeyman HVAC Technician in the Facilities Department. This is a full-time, 40-hour a week position.  Qualified applicants need to be skilled in installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repairing of commercial and residential HVAC systems. 

Key Responsibilities

Installation, Maintenance & Repair

  • Installs, inspects, tests, operates, and repairs all HVAC and ancillary system equipment.
  • Checks, services, cleans, and replaces filters and belts on all HVAC units; documents maintenance and service history.
  • Replaces and aligns HVAC system motors, pumps, and bearings.
  • Cleans, maintains, and replaces heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and exhaust grills and ductwork.
  • Rebuilds pumps; replaces valves, actuators, contactors, relays, dampers, transformers, motors, and pulleys.
  • Performs steam trap troubleshooting and replacement.


Controls & Specialized Systems

  • Services, repairs, rewires, and calibrates electric controls.
  • Works with pneumatic and digital controls, hot water and steam boiler distribution systems, chillers, and cooling towers.
  • Calibrates, repairs, and maintains pneumatic control systems and related equipment.
  • Troubleshoots and maintains Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units in data centers and server rooms across campus, responding with appropriate urgency.
  • Troubleshoots and maintains compressed air and vacuum systems.


Technical & Administrative

  • Interprets schematic drawings, plans, specifications, and diagrams related to installation, repair, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Applies working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and refrigeration codes and practices; coordinates work with other trades.
  • Tracks and completes preventive maintenance tasks as scheduled.
  • Researches, requests, orders, and maintains inventory of materials, parts, and supplies; maintains accurate tool inventory.
  • Coordinates and inspects work performed by outside contractors.
  • Estimates time and materials for repairs; adjusts as needed to ensure timely completion.
  • Processes work orders, inventory records, and preventive maintenance forms.
  • Processes and completes hot work permits; oversees and performs fire watches and inspections as necessary.


Schedule & Safety

  • Works a rotating on-call schedule, including after-hours emergency recall.
  • Works overtime, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
  • Adheres to workplace safety policies, procedures, and OSHA requirements at all times, including lockout/tagout, safe material handling, and ladder/aerial lift operation.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 5–10 years of experience in the commercial HVAC industry.
  • New Jersey Black Seal low-pressure boiler operator license.
  • Obtain a New Jersey Underground Storage Tank Operator Certification within 6 months of employment.
  • EPA CFC Universal refrigerant handling certification.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license; able to operate an automobile, van, light truck, or utility vehicle.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication and interpersonal skills.


Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Normal mobility to move around construction and work sites.
  • Able to bend, stoop, twist, and climb ladders.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, including up and down stairs.
  • Subject to outdoor environmental conditions.
  • Able to communicate via email, telephone, two-way radio, and cell phone.
  • Able to multitask in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.


Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of safe operating procedures, including lockout/tagout.
  • Familiarity with building automation systems.
  • Familiarity with variable frequency drives.
  • Familiarity with Pro Press tools and fittings.
  • Ability to braze and solder.
  • Ability to troubleshoot low- and high-voltage issues (up to 3-phase, 480V).
  • Ability to apply industry standards for installation, repair, and safety.
  • Proficiency operating power tools, equipment, and computer-based systems.
  • Familiarity with computerized CMMS work order processes.
  • Adaptable and customer-focused under high-stress conditions and one-of-a-kind situations.
  • Responsive to supervisory direction with strong productivity and quality standards.
  • Sound administrative coordination regarding job assignments and time management.
  • Working knowledge of preventive maintenance best practices.
