Job Description

HVAC Apprenticeship Instructor

Position Type: Part-time – 4 to 8 hours weekly; evenings 5PM – 9PM

Reports To: Executive Director

Compensation: Starting at $35 per hour, commensurate with experience; additional benefits

Position Summary

IEC Central Ohio is seeking an experienced HVAC professional to serve as an instructor for a Registered Apprenticeship Program in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration. The instructor will deliver classroom and hands-on instruction, reinforce safety and professional standards, evaluate apprentice progress, and help align training with employer needs and registered apprenticeship requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver classroom, lab, and shop instruction for HVAC apprentices at various training levels.
  • Teach core HVAC topics, including safety, tools, electrical fundamentals, refrigeration cycle, piping, airflow, duct systems, controls, troubleshooting, installation, maintenance, and service.
  • Prepare lesson plans, demonstrations, assignments, assessments, and hands-on activities aligned with program standards.
  • Assess apprentice knowledge, technical skill, attendance and readiness for advancement.
  • Maintain accurate records for attendance, grades, competencies, certifications, lab activities, and required documentation and log into electronic database.
  • Promote safe work practices and ensure proper use of tools, equipment, labs, and personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain instructional equipment, tools, materials, and lab spaces in safe, organized condition.
  • Integrate current HVAC technologies, codes, manufacturer practices, energy-efficiency principles, and field trends into instruction.
  • Support workplace readiness skills including communication, punctuality, teamwork customer service documentation and problem solving.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years of HVAC field experience in installation service maintenance commissioning or troubleshooting.
  • Strong knowledge of residential and/or commercial HVAC systems including furnaces air conditioners heat pumps refrigeration controls ventilation ductwork and electrical components.
  • Commitment to safety quality workmanship professional conduct and ethical training practices.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to adult learners with varied experience levels.
  • Strong communication organization time-management and classroom/shop leadership skills.
  • Ability to use basic computer applications digital curriculum tools email learning management systems and electronic records.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; ability to pass required background checks drug screening and other compliance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • NATE HVAC Excellence manufacturer-specific or other relevant industry credentials.
  • Prior teaching training mentoring crew leadership curriculum development or instruction experience.
  • Knowledge of applicable mechanical codes electrical codes refrigeration regulations safety standards and advanced HVAC systems or troubleshooting.
